What is a debit card?

A debit card is a cash-free way of making payments, with the money deducted directly from your current account.

Ideal for paying for day-to-day expenses
Accepted worldwide, wherever you see the Mastercard logo
Gives you access to cash and the ability to pay for goods and services in-store and online
Withdraw up to £1,500 per day from cash machines (across all cardholders on an account)

How do I activate my debit card?

To activate your debit card, simply use it to make a payment or withdraw cash from a cash machine. If you're an existing customer, remember to destroy your old debit card once the replacement is activated.

Make sure to check that your card details are up-to-date for any website that you use regularly to pay for goods or services. Don't forget about subscriptions and recurring payments.

What is the security code on my debit card?

The security code is a 3-digit number found on the back of your debit card. Often called the CVV or CVC, it adds a second level of authentication when making online or over-the-phone purchases.

My debit card is about to expire. What should I do?

Your debit card will expire on the last day of the month / year printed on the front of your card. This is formatted as 'Expires End MM/YY'.

We'll send you a new debit card one in the post at least one week before your current card is due to expire. When you receive your new debit card you should securely destroy your old one.

Can I use Apple Pay and Google Pay with my business debit card?

Yes, you can and it only takes a few minutes to set up.

Managing your card

I've misplaced my debit card. Can I temporarily freeze my card?

With our mobile app or online banking you can freeze your debit card so it can't be used until you find it. When you find your card you can remove the block.

Using our mobile app, you have access to a range of payment controls to stop your card making certain types of payments:

Contactless
Online and telephone payments
Gambling
International debit card payments
Chip and PIN transactions

You can instantly switch these back off at any time in the app.

Using your debit card abroad

How much does it cost to use my debit card abroad?

We charge a Foreign Purchase Fee of 2.75% of the value of the transaction if you:

make a debit card payment in a foreign currency
make a payment in pounds outside the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar

The fee is a percentage of the Sterling transaction amount, minimum £1.

Should I let you know if I'll be using my debit card abroad?

To reduce the chance of your transactions being blocked, remember to register your travel plans with us before travelling.

How to register your travel plans with us

Letting us know about your travel plans in advance will reduce the likelihood of your transactions being blocked.

All you need to do is log in to the mobile app then:

select the account which has the debit card
choose 'Manage my card'
select 'Going Abroad'
follow the on-screen instructions

You will be able to create one Travel Plan at a time by choosing 'Add Country', for a maximum period of 90 days, including up to 7 countries. Each country will need to be registered individually e.g.

Destination 1 - Germany, entry 27/08/20XX, exit 10/09/20XX
Destination 2 - France, entry 11/09/20XX, exit 16/09/20XX (etc)

Please check that the Travel Plan:

does not have overlaps or gaps between destination dates
is no longer than 90 days in duration

The Travel Plan will apply to debit cards only attached to accounts managed via mobile banking.

Is my debit card eligible for Mastercard Business Savings?

If your NatWest International business debit card starts with ‘537316' then your card is eligible.

Do I need to enrol for Mastercard Business Savings?

No, there is no requirement to enrol your debit card as this benefit is provided automatically.

If you wish to remove your business account from the programme, please call the telephone number on the back of your card.

Is there a fee for Mastercard Business Savings?

There is no cost to you for participation in the Mastercard Business Savings programme.

How do I take advantage of the merchant offers?

Simply use your eligible business debit card on a qualifying purchase at any participating merchant. The rebate is paid directly to the business bank account within 3-5 business days after the qualifying purchase.

Rebates will be shown on monthly and online statements.

If a purchase is returned, will the cashback be impacted?

Yes. When an item is returned, Mastercard will reverse the appropriate portion of the rebate.

Do the merchant offers have an expiry date?

There are no specific expiry dates on participating merchant offers. Check the Mastercard Business Savings website for participating merchants and offer details.
