What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay lets you make secure, contactless payments with Apple devices such as iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac in a shop or online.

Use Apple Pay to make purchases in all kinds of apps, a pizza delivery or a new pair of trainers with the devices you carry every day. Checking out is fast, simple and secure. No need to hunt for your wallet or purse.

Setting up Apple Pay using our app

If you have our mobile banking app, getting started with Apple Pay is easy. All you need is your debit card, your iCloud login details and have a supported device.

If you have our mobile app and use an iPhone 6 or above

Log in to the mobile app, making sure you have the latest version downloaded
On your iPhone select the account your debit card is linked to, then ‘Manage my card & Apple Pay’ > Tap the ‘Add to Wallet’ button and follow the on-screen instructions

If you have an Apple Watch linked to your phone, you will be able to select the option on-screen to add the card to your Apple Watch.

Once complete, your card will be available for use within the Apple Wallet.

App available to customers aged 11+ with compatible iOS and Android devices and a Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK or international mobile number in specific countries.

Other ways to set up Apple Pay

How you set up Apple Pay will change depending on which type of Apple device you are using:

On iPhone open Wallet and tap the '+' icon in the upper-right corner
On iPad go to 'Settings' > 'Wallet' > 'Apple Pay' > 'Add Card'
For Apple Watch, go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap 'Wallet & Apple Pay' > 'Add Card'
For a Mac with Touch ID go to ‘System Preferences’ > ‘Wallet & Apple Pay’ > ‘Add Card’
For a Mac without Touch ID, you'll need to complete the purchase using an eligible iPhone or Apple Watch

If you have a NatWest International debit card registered with iTunes, the details will be retrieved from iTunes. You can proceed to add this card or you can choose to add a new card.

NatWest International will verify your information and may ask for more information. Once you have this simply go back to Wallet and tap your card.

How does Apple Pay work?

Apple Pay uses contactless technology to process payments instantly, with the reassurance of robust security features built into your device whether you're using it in stores, in apps or on the web.

Apple Pay allows your NatWest International debit card to be registered into the Wallet app on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.

In shops, Apple Pay can be used if the retailer accepts contactless payments. Your device doesn't even need a mobile signal to make a transaction, it uses contactless technology to communicate directly with the payment terminal.

To use in apps or on the web, select Apple Pay at checkout and complete using Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. No need to create an account or fill out lengthy forms.

Where can I use Apple Pay?

Use Apple Pay wherever you see the contactless or Apple Pay symbols. You can use Apple Pay in store, in apps or on websites.

It is not necessary for the iPhone to have any mobile signal in order to make an Apple Pay transaction, the iPhone uses contactless technology to communicate directly with the payment terminal.

How secure is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is a secure way to pay. Every transaction on your iPhone or iPad requires you to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Your Apple Watch is protected by the passcode that only you know, and your passcode is required every time you put on your Apple Watch.

Your card number and identity aren't shared with the retailer, and your actual card numbers aren't stored on your device or on Apple servers.

When you're paying in an app, the retailer will only receive information they need to fulfil your order. Any information retained by Apple Pay is anonymous, and the nature of your purchase cannot be identified. Apps that use Apple Pay must have a privacy policy that you can view which governs the use of your data.

We take security very seriously and, provided you take appropriate care, we'll offer you the same protection against fraud when you use Apple Pay, as we do for your NatWest International debit card.
